Just had to reply to say that TimF laid out an extremely well written and accurate response. This is wiki worthy honestly.

Re: Trying To Determine If I Have A Hardware Issue

Try replacing your SATA cable too, they don't fail often but it happens.

Re: Partitions Resize

Is doing a backup via the webGUI and restoring after a clean install out of the question? From the details in this thread it sounds like quite an old install. I recently had the pleasure of needing to resize the boot on my old home install, I also wanted to move to the 64-bit version as the devs hav...

Re: Need advice Intel i350, SSD help?

Something like this would be just fine: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J5EZQ7O/ Its barebones, you add your own RAM and storage drive. These things pull next to nothing in wattage and if your are in an area like me where electricity is pricey these things pay for themselves within a year or so...

Re: Need advice Intel i350, SSD help?

If this is for a home based network that is crazy overkill. For home installs a cheap pc from a thrift shop and some old gigabit network cards do the job. So to suggest a good build we need some info: Where is this machine going to be deployed? At home? At a business? How many users/machines will it...

Re: NIC hangs, then resets during speedtest, high throughput.

Best I can tell it may be assigning the wrong driver. looks like its using the e1000e driver however a few years back the 82546GB wasn't compatible with it and instead used the e1000 driver. Only advice I can give would be to try blacklisting the e1000e driver and try loading the cards with the e100...

Re: Portforwarding(ENG ONLY PLEASE)

Deepcuts more or less spelled it out for you in his screenshot. Your screen looks different (colored bars) because you didn't match his settings. Match your source and NAT settings to what he showed and it will work. Also leave your source port at the bottom blank or nothing will work.

Re: Quick Question from Newbie

I'm not really familiar with Virtualbox so I'll refrain from any guessing that could lead you down the wrong path. I will say there isn't any problem using the host's MAC over a fake one. There are some theories about IPv6 and MACs being used to track people but that is nearing tin foil hat territor...

Re: IPFire as a respected platform...

I would wait and see what the "IT Support" owner brings to the table first and calmly give some facts on the cost/value comparison of the feature set vs IPFire. No matter what they show up with there will be big yearly licensing costs for features IPFire has out of the box. Cisco firewall? Even a ch...

Re: Quick Question from Newbie

I use that same modem at home as well. The order doesn't really matter so much it just exliminates some extra waiting while testing. As long as the modem is fully up and running IPFire should be able to grab an IP on red eventually. Since this is a VM I would suggest you make sure your have your red...

Re: Quick Question from Newbie

Had this issue many times ARRIS/Motorola modems especially. If you're in the USA leave red at DHCP and give rebooting your modem a shot. Some modems will bind to the MAC address of the edge device and power cycling allows for a new device to be used. Just shutdown IPFire and reboot the modem, once t...

Re: How can we improve the IPFire Forums?

Thought I would throw my option in as well... Been using IPFire a long time, about 2007 if memory serves, I'm one of the old refugees from the IPCop days. I really can't say enough good things about IPFire to friends, colleagues and clients. Every deployment I've ever used as been rock solid and del...

Re: Hand Super Tired Clicking Few Thousand Snort IDS Rules

It sounds like you are trying to enable every single rule in every single ruleset. This is a common mistake for folks new to IPFire and IDS in general so if this is not the case you can ignore this. You only need to enable rules that have value to your network. For example if you don't host a web se...
