Intel® Wireless 3165 support and IPFire 2.x

Post by codiac2 » January 6th, 2016, 11:58 am

Hi all,

my old firewall machine died a few weeks ago. The new machine has the wireless chip set: Intel® Wireless 3165

lspci output is this one:

# lspci | grep -ie network -ie ethernet -ie wireless
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 3165 (rev 81)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 15)

# lspci -nn -v -s 02:00.0
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wireless 3165 [8086:3165] (rev 81)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless AC 3165 [8086:4010]
Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 17
Memory at 81300000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities: [c8] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [d0] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [40] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting
Capabilities: [140] Device Serial Number 94-65-9c-ff-ff-66-85-c3
Capabilities: [14c] Latency Tolerance Reporting
Capabilities: [154] #1e

According to the following page i need a 4.1 Kernel to get this running:

https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/use ... rs/iwlwifi

I tried to backport the driver from 4.1 to 3.14 but there are too many changes in the kernel infrastructure and i also tried a build with a 4.1 kernel but failed so far with IPFire 2.X.

What will be the best approach to get the current wifi driver together with IPFire 2.x (or even 3.x) ?

Any hints welcome ...

Best regards,
Juergen

If you want to use this as an access point you should know that this module does not support this.

I have talked with Michael yesterday but it was a mistake that this module not support the AP Mode.

It not an easy task to change wlan modules. You have to update "lfs/backports" package. At the moment IPFire use 3.18-1 because the 4.0 and 4.1 has many wlan buggy drivers.

Maybee the new 4.2.6-1 is working...

PS: I will not answer support questions via email and ignore IPFire related messages on my non IPFire.org mail addresses.

Hi List,

the new update to IPFire 2.19 - 100 solved the wifi driver issue.
Just the firmware files were missing in the update (the iwlwifi-7265-ucode-25.30.13.0.tgz). Now if have wifi again on my firewall box ;-)
The last months i tried to compile version 97, 98 and 99 but needed to remove much of the grsecurity patches for linux-3.14.63 to get it running.

Good job !

Have fun,
Jürgen

Hi,

I also have this card.
Could you explain the full process to make this card work on 3.14 kernel ?
I have downloaded the intel firmware from this page (currently 25.30.14) but I don't know where to put ?

Thanks

Found solution.

Put the following firmware zip content (ucode files) https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/_media ... 0.13.0.tgz in the /lib/firmware folder and reboot ipfire

You should see in the /var/log/bootlog those lines
[ 4.832229] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: loaded firmware version 25.30.13.0 op_mode iwlmvm
[ 4.861570] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 3165, REV=0x210

If you can't see those lines, try with this firmware https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/_media ... 0.14.0.tgz
You should see those lines
[ 4.832229] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: loaded firmware version 25.30.14.0 op_mode iwlmvm
[ 4.861570] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 3165, REV=0x210

Now you can configure blue interface and hostapd addon ;)

[ 9.105834] iwlwifi 0000:04:00.0: Direct firmware load failed with error -2
