Core update from 120 -> 121/122

Post by angel7270 » September 10th, 2018, 3:45 pm

Hello,

I need urgent help with a problem upgrading ipfire from Core 120 to 121/122. The firewall upgrade could happen only remote as I am 500km away from the physical location.
Before I started the upgrade process, I activated ssh to enable console access if something is not running smoothly.

So, I tried to install 121 via Pakfire and the process started, however after a while the webgui access did not work anymore. Not connection via https was possible.

I accessed the ipfire via ssh and it was still on the old kernel 3.14.79. Then I tried to restart the apache server with the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache restart - but the error message apachectl is not found appeared. I tried to search the respective directory where apachectl should be, but not apachectl.

In the next step I tried to restart ipfire with shutdown - r now command from the console. I received broadcast message on the console that the system is going down, but there was no shutdown, the system stayed running in init3 mode.

I contacted a person onsite to restart the ipfire, which had been done and the ipfire runs again. Since then, I have no access to ipfire and internet services are not available.

It seams that the upgrade process somehow did not work properly. What can I do without going there physically?

Thanks for a quick help.

kind regards
Andre

As far as I understand, a reboot was performed, when the system had been updated to Core 121, but not yet to Core 122.

I made the experience, that this "kills" the installation. I have also seen certain threads that indicate that: https://forum.ipfire.org/viewtopic.php? ... 22#p118360

So I bet that you have to do a fresh install on site ???

Hello zargano,

after the web interface went down, I did ssh to the console and it still showed 3.14.79. So I think that it was still updating to core121, but somehow hung in the process as many programs were missing.

I did a backup of core 120, but can I do a fresh install with core122 / core123 and then do a restore of the config to the new core?

Thanks.

You should be able to perform a fresh install with Core 122/123, and then restore the system from a backup made under Core 120. IMHO this is straight forward and the easiest way to get out of a crashed system in unknown state.
