Is there any development to get Ipfire to run on routers, basically the same as DD-WRT is doing ?
I guess the answer will be no, but I thought I will ask as it would be quite nice since DD-WRT seems to be going extinct.
Ipfire on Routers (like DD-WRT)
Re: Ipfire on Routers (like DD-WRT)
Most routers specific hardware are arm based, and IPFire has a limited support for arm. Besides, IPFire is a firewall centric distro, it does not exactly overlap with projects like DD-WRT which are more focused on being an access point. For example, look how IPFire and openwrt differs in performance when using the same hardware (an APU2 board from pcengines with the 2 most common wireless cards sold with this board) as an access point (spoiler: opnewrt is way faster in the wifi throughput):

Actually, this is even worse, as quite a few routers are using MIPS, see for example

openwrt is still going.
but there is hardware that allows you to ipfire in a system that is comparable to those router supported by dd-wrt.

Hi,
yes, IPFire is a lot different.
It mainly does a lot more things with each network packet that it forwards. There is more analysis (IDS), more reporting, more logging done than on the tiny routers which normally have around 4-16 MB of RAM. An IPFire box has that in Gigabytes.
If you are buying some hardware in the form-factor of the IPFire Mini Appliance, I would 100% recommend to go with IPFire than OpenWRT.
