URL Filter Stopped Working

Post by Nick Hammen » September 24th, 2013, 2:31 am

I've noticed for the last few days, the URL filter in my logs have been empty. Every system is configured to use IPFire as a proxy server, and up to a few days ago, it was working great. I started getting suspicious after ads started displaying when they were previously blocked. I've tried rebooting the IPFire box, and restarting the proxy server, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Where can I find the proper logs to post for troubleshooting?

Look at WUI - Logs - Url-Filter-Logs and then switch to squidGuard and refresh ...

I switched over to the Squidguard view, there are plenty of logs for that, but upon switching back to the URL filter logs, they still appear empty. Even after 10 minute or so of surfing. It also appears that the proxy server's content filter doesn't seem to be functioning. I can get to site that had previously been blocked.

There are Errors in the Squidguard-Log?
Followed by "switching to emergency mode"?

I don't see anything in the squidguard log that suggest running into an emergency. I have gotten the URL filter to work again after manually updating the definitions, but it's hit and miss. It'll work great for 3 days and just stop for 3 more days until I manually do an update. Here is the log for when it starts correctly.

01:29:18  [11275]  squidGuard ready for requests (1380781758.194)
01:29:18  [11275]  squidGuard 1.4 started (1380781755.442)
01:29:18  [11275]  init expressionlist /var/ipfire/urlfilter/blacklists/custom/blocked/expressions
01:29:18  [11275]  loading dbfile /var/ipfire/urlfilter/blacklists/custom/blocked/urls.db
01:29:18  [11275]  init urllist /var/ipfire/urlfilter/blacklists/custom/blocked/urls
01:29:18  [11275]  loading dbfile /var/ipfire/urlfilter/blacklists/custom/blocked/domains.db
01:29:18  [11275]  init domainlist /var/ipfire/urlfilter/blacklists/custom/blocked/domains

But when it fails to work, and the URL filter doesn't work, this is what it shows.

01:29:18  [11264]  squidGuard ready for requests (1380781758.158)
01:29:18  [11264]  squidGuard 1.4 started (1380781755.388)
01:29:18  [11264]  init expressionlist /var/ipfire/urlfilter/blacklists/custom/blocked/expressions

I actually can't seem to find any errors in the SquidGuard log at all, that was just the difference that I found.

Hi,

I have just had this problem start. The URL filter has stopped working & the Squidguard log does have a number of warnings "Going into emergency mode".

Any advice on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Please post the log. If the urlfiter goes to Emergency there is a critical error somewhere...

Thanks for the reply.

I think I found the error, a change made in the URL filter settings for time restraints for some users thru the GUI interface had partially remained in the squidGuard.conf file after the change had been removed.
