Configuration on Soekris 6501 via serial console

Post by user001234 » June 16th, 2019, 10:38 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to install the latest IPFire on a Soekris device. I used to have an older version running but at some point there was an upgrade that was too large for my /boot (partition was 60 MB by default), so decided to just wipe it and restart.

I'm using an SSD on SATA port 0. I downloaded an i586 image, uncompressed it, and ran "dd if=file.img of=/dev/sda" on another system to install it, which seems to go well enough.

When back in the Soekris box, I boot it with minicom attached (115200 8N1 HW: yes SW: no), see the BIOS boot, I get the GRUB menu (though it seems to load slowly and I can't interact with it...different baud rate?),. IT counts down 5 seconds, I see "Loading Linux 4.14-ipfire" and "Loading initial ramdisk", and then that is it. The disk has a lot of activity then the system reboots (guessing it is resizing the partitions?), and then the same boot process, and nothing else.

My question is, am I doing something wrong, or has the configuration changed significantly since 3 years ago? I can't seem to get into the configuration menu. I looked around the forum for other Soekris installation issues, but nothing seems to be quite what I'm experiencing.

Thanks in advance,
Russel

Check yor serial cable. You need to interact with the grub menu.

Copy the flashimage again to the disk and select the third grub option which permanent enable the serial console.

If this not work you have to change the grub.conf to boot the third option. It must bootet at first boot to get the serial console working.

Thanks for the quick response.

So I went in and modified grub default to '2' (should reference the third option), but when I boot, I'm only seeing two options present:
- IPFire 2.23 (i586) - core132 GNU/Linux
- Advanced options for IPFire 2.23 (i586) - core132 GNU/Linux

Is the serial mode under advance options?

Tried the advanced option anyway in the Grub menu, but that doesn't seem to change the results. I know my serial cable is good because I can grab the Soekris BIOS (Ctrl-P) before Grub comes up.

Any other simple changes I can make to the image to have it work?
Thanks in advance,
Russel

Reinstall our image. At first boot there are three options.

Awesome, thanks so much!
Did not realize that boot option went away.
