Samba 4.x

Post by stumped » September 8th, 2019, 10:59 pm

Hello,

Samba and windows appears to be a fast moving target. I've beat my head on the wall trying to get a new windows 10 pro host to join a samba domain with samba 3.6.25 and IPFire 2.23 (x86_64) - Core Update 135. I'm coming to the conclusion that this is not possible anymore with the latest versions of Windows 10 wanting to use Active Directory.

Question 1, if I may please:

Has any one gotten samba 3.6.25 and windows 10 pro version 1903 / OS build 18362.329 working as a primary domain controller?

Question 2:

Is there an upgrade to samba 4.x in the pipeline?

Thanks,
Stumpy

I have build samba4 long time ago but it works only without the domain controller part. Samba4 domain controller needs so many additional libs and resources that are incompatible to the usual linux versions. (e.g. ldap vs. AD) that it is too much work to support it for us.

We suggest to install a dedicated machine or a vm for a samba4 pdc.

I'm running my AD on a Synology NAS. Of course it's Samba based, too, guess anything with version 3.x
Works perfectly well with many Windows Pro clients, about 10 installations, perhaps you too own this type of NAS?

Arne.F & Hellfire,

Thank you for the replies. I'll work on setting up another box.

This can be fixed by enabling the SMB 1 client in Windows 10.

Whether or not this is a good idea is a separate subject.

Best regards,
Fred
