More CPU cores or faster CPU with less Cores?

Post by hasseman » June 14th, 2019, 8:12 pm

I wondering what should be the best solution for a larger network. 50-150 computers.
Slower CPU with multible cores or a faster CPU with less cores?

If the question has been answerd please send me a link. I could not find anything about it?

I have 2 options.
One older CPU and one a bit newer.

AMD Athlon 64 x2 4800+ @ 2.4 ghz (with 4 gb DDR and 2 pci-e LAN card
OR
Intel Core2Duo E6300 @ 1,86 ghz (with 4 gb DDR2 and 1 pci-e LAN card, 1 gbit LAN port on motherbord)

AMD computer:
MB: ASUS a8n-32-sli deluxe

Intel computer:
Dell optiplex 745 (tower)

The benchmarks says the intel cpu is better but is it better then the AMD for IPfire?

Check the "cpu vulnerablities" im not sure about the AMD but it should not affected by MDS and Meltdown so i think the AMD is the better chouce.
Only for spectre 4 im not sure...

If you are not using suricata both cpu's should able to hande the Gigabit cards. If it are slower that there are design issues on the Mainboards.

I also think both are not really energy efficient...
